Disc 1:
“Judy began recording for Capitol Records in 1955, fresh from her triumphant ‘comeback’ in the 1954 Warner Bros. film “A Star Is Born”. Judy made all her albums at Capitol’s studios in Hollywood. We’ve selected songs from 5 of her 6 albums for this collection. Her collaboration with Gordon Jenkins on the concept album “The Letter” is best heard in its’ entirety and has been reluctantly omitted from this collection. In addition to the studio recordings, Capitol also released one soundtrack LP called “I Could Go On Singing” from the 1963 United Artists film. Two songs from this picture are included. In preparing this material for digital transfer, the Mono recordings (tracks 1.1 – 1.13) were made directly from the original session tapes. As was the practice then, these recordings already had proper EQ and reverb. The Stereo recordings (tracks 1.14 – 1.20) are taken from the original 3-track session masters. They were essentially “flat” with no reverb whatsoever. Using Capitol’s famed natural echo chambers, the proper amount of reverb was added during the mix. [These chambers are located at the rear of the Capitol Records Tower, buried beneath the back parking lot.] The final two Stereo recordings (tracks 1.21 & 1.22) are taken from the 2-track master tape which was mixed down from the original film track. Unfortunately, the tapes were not in prime condition. Fortunately, a method has been recently developed to make tapes in this condition acceptable. It requires that the tape reel be “baked” in a convection oven for several hours. As you will hear, the results were successful. (By the way, don’t try this at home, folks!)” Pete Kline

Tracks 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 From Capitol W-676 “Miss Show Business”. Released 9/26/55. AAD: from Mono session tapes.
Tracks 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9 From Capitol T-734 “Judy”. Released 10/10/56. AAD: from Mono session tapes.
Tracks 1.10, 1.11, 1.12, 1.13 From Capitol T-835 “Alone”. Released 5/6/57. AAD: from Mono session tapes.
Tracks 1.14, 1.15, 1.16 From Capitol ST-1036 “Judy In Love”. Released 11/3/58. AAD: Mixed from 3-track session tapes.

Disc 2:
“Judy Garland made her first ‘official’ live recording when at Capitol in 1958. (An earlier bootleg LP of her 1952 performance at the Palace Theatre in New York City was available, but in terrible sound.) When the album was released, two songs from the Cocoanut Grove appearance were not used due to microphone noises. However, with several new digital restoration techniques now available, these two songs have been cleaned up dramatically, and are presented here for the very first time along with selections from the original release. (Tracks 2.1 – 2.5) Much has been written and said about Judy’s incredible 1961 Carnegie Hall recordings. Needless to say, they remain as a testament to one of the most exciting live performances ever recorded. (Tracks 2.6 – 2.9) [Note: Tracks 10-12 appear printed in book in error) The three selections that follow were recorded at Manhattan Center in New York City a year after the Carnegie concert. A specially invited, star-studded audience sat in on what was essentially a recording session rather than a concert. (Tracks 2.10 – 2.12) Next up are selections recorded from a CBS weekly TV series of 1963-1964. They are from Mono source (no Stereo broadcasting in those days, unfortunately) and are of lesser quality than one would like. However, they are exciting performances and these digital transfers by Capitol recording engineer Kevin Reeves are a vast improvement over the original album versions. (Tracks 2.13 – 2.17) Finally, there are six performances from a London Palladium concert of 1963 featuring Judy and daughter Liza Minnelli. Three of the selections in this collection are a first-time release. (Tracks 2.18 – 2.23) With the exception of the TV tracks, which are from a Mono off-line source, all the songs were mixed from the original 3-track session master tapes.” Pete Kline

Disc 3:
“In 1960, Judy Garland travelled [sic] to London to perform in a series of concert and nightclub appearances throughout Europe. While in England, she stayed at the home of producer-conductor Norrie Paramor. Norrie was also her conductor throughout the tour. In a letter written to this writer in 1972, Norrie related that “Judy seemed remarkably happy at this stage of her life.” He went on to write, “She always had a great sense of humour and she was certainly at the top of her form with us.” Indeed she was, as these wonderful recordings reveal. When the sessions were finished, the recordings were mixed down to 2-track and sent along to Capitol in Hollywood. All who listened to the tapes were understandably impressed, not only with Judy’s singing, but with exceptional sound quality. Nevertheless, most of these twenty recordings remained unreleased until 1962, when just six of them appeared on “The Garland Touch” album. Interestingly, their exact origin was not mentioned on that release and to many a Garland fan they must have been a mystery, albeit, a delightful one! A decade later, the rest of the sides along with the 6 previously released, appeared on an album distributed only through the Capitol Record Club. A follow-up release through Capitol Special Markets also had limited distribution. We are pleased to finally bring the rest of you the first digital release of these legendary performances.” Pete Kline

Tracks 3.1, 3.2, 3.10, 3.11, 3.12, 3.13, 3.14 From Capitol SW-1710 “The Garland Touch”. Released 7/30/62.
Tracks 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, 3.9, 3.15, 3.16, 3.17, 3.18, 3.19, 3.20 From Capitol Record Club SQBE-94407 “Judy In London”. Released 1972.
Recorded at EMI Studios, London. AAD: Mixed from 2-track master tapes.
